The Tall Ships Race 2018 was based in Sunderland.

Sunderland Maritime Heritage was asked to put forward a proposal for our inclusion in the programme of activities.

We were delighted to be given the opportunity to involve our local volunteers, community and heritage partners in this prestigious and exciting event.  We would like to sincerely thank the Tall Ships Race 2018 organisers for this invitation.

The purpose of the Tall Ships Races is the development and education of young people of all nationalities, cultures, religions and social backgrounds through the sail training experience.

Every summer Sail Training International organises The Tall Ships Races, presented by Szczecin (2010 - 2013). This annual event is held in European waters and one of the key rules is that 50% of each ship's crew must be aged between 15 and 25 years.

The Tall Ships Races are planned four years in advance with the route carefully selected to enable visits to different sea areas around Europe, from the Baltic to the Mediterranean.
