Hello There - just found your website - re Sunderland built ships.
I sailed in quite a few mostly built by Shorts. They include my first ship Generton (Owners - R.Chapman & Son - Newcastle ,which i joined as a deck apprentice in July 1946) Hermiston - sister ship which was displayed as a builders model in Sunderland Museum/Library. MV Sutherland (Sutherlands - Newcastle)Doxford engined. Brent Knoll which I believe was built by Austin/Pickersgill and a few more. They were all strong.well built ships which could deal with anything the sea threw at them.Happy days. Jim Ewing Washington. (Masters Certificate No.78217 - October 1956.) ps the best Captain I sailed with was a Sunderland man Captain James Londsdale Milburn) A true gentleman. |
