News 2004

December 2004

Sunderland Maritime Heritage have obtained new larger premises in Church Street East courtesy of Sunderland Council. We hope during 2005 to convert them into a more accessible centre for visitors and will also be transferring some of the workshop operations there.

November 2004

Sunderland's maritime connection continues. We may not be building ships anymore, but the repair and refitting of ships continues at Wear Dock Ltd and Pallion Engineering Ltd.

We are fortunate to be located next to Wear Dock Ltd and have seen a steady flow of ships to their facility. Pallion Engineering Ltd, located next to the Queen Alexandra Bridge, recently secured an order to refit three large Seacat ferries operated by Hoverspeed  Ltd.

The picture left, taken by Neil Mearns, shows the largest of the ferries, SuperSeaCat One passing under Wearmouth bridge.

A group from Sunderland Maritime Heritage visited Irvine, Scotland, to inspect the City of Adelaide.  The picture right shows the plastic sheeting which now covers her decks for protection from the weather.

We've been sent some pictures of 'Wear Hopper No3' on the Thames near Tower Bridge by Richard Bulch. It is believed she was built by J L Thompson & Sons in the 50's. Richard says "the ship is in a terrible state, still floats, and has been there for at least 10 years"

 .

We would be pleased to hear from anyone who can tell us more about Wear Hopper No3.

September 2004

We took part in the Heritage Open Days 2004 weekend, opening to the public on both the Saturday and Sunday afternoons.

July/August 2004

Both the model of the 'City of Adelaide' and the restored foy coble 'Little Lady' were on display at the Sunderland International Air Show and the Motor Show.
