Part of John Rain’s Eye Plan showing Sunderland in the I780s

Greetings from everyone at Sunderland Maritime Heritage H.Q. which could be either our first premises at the South Dock or our second premises, Unit 2 Church Street East, depending on your point of view!

The South Dock is still our official address, we still have an office there, also our library artifacts and photo displays. Board meetings still take place there on Monday evenings.

Unit 2 Church Street East is now our main workshop and boat-building area; it became obvious last year that the organisation had outgrown the available workshop space at the South Docks. The Council offered to lease us Unit 2 Church Street East at a nominal rent and we are in the process of consulting our solicitor and sorting out the terms of the contract.

Church Street East is the road which runs from the old Sunderland Parish Church to the bottom of High Street. These premises are therefore considerably more accessible than those at the South Dock. Stricter port regulations make access to the South Dock even more difficult at the moment.

Why not visit us at Church Street East? Mondays, Wednesdays, Fridays, hours as before. There is a special Open Afternoon on Friday June 10th between 14.00— 17.00 (or 2.00—5.00 for those who are less nautically inclined). Further details in the list of forthcoming events.

Put the date in your diary!

In Europe some of the projects they have been involved with include the Guggenheim Museum, Bilbao, Spain; Louvre, Paris; EXPO 2000, Hannover, Germany and The Lowry, Salford, England.

We understand that the study is due for completion in March 2006.

Another Home for SMH

During the past year it became obvious that we were outgrowing our premises at the South Docks,
space for the workshops and for boat building was extremely restricted. It was therefore necessary to look for additional or alternative accommodation. Sunderland Council was approached: we were offered the lease of a unit in Church Street East — which would provide us with a great deal of workshop space — at a nominal rent (an important factor) We have taken up the offer. The accompanying pictures show the Unit as it was a week or two after SMI-1 moved in. A great deal of work had already been done — by the same reliable group of directors and volunteers. The building (one of a row of five) is large, virtually empty, and weatherproof and has a great deal of potential. A platform area has already been installed and a great deal of bench / working area has been created. Lights have been installed at working level, much painting has taken place, a new alarm system and a new telephone system have now been installed.

The offices - you can see why I don't want to move from the South Dock! (Ed)

There is to be an Open Afternoon on June 10th from 14:00 — 17:00 (or 2:00 — 5:00 if you prefer that ) — see the Heritage Festival list of activities. Please take advantage of this opportunity to see what is going on — it is your organisation and your support would be most welcome.

You can of course visit us at the usual times — Mondays, Wednesdays, Fridays, between 10:00 and 4:00.

City of Adelaide

We have no further news regarding the subject close to our hearts — the future of the City of Adelaide. She is still in exile in Scotland: we have heard nothing from Mike Edwards. You may remember that some of the directors visited her last autumn. It was suggested then that other members might like to pay their respects to her. Is there any interest in that idea? Would any members like a visit to be arranged? Perhaps you would like to travel to Irvine for one day, stay overnight and return the following day. I understand that the directors who went last autumn found it rather too much to do in one go. i.e. driving there, visiting the Scottish Maritime Museum and driving back all in the course of a few hours. If you would like such a trip to be arranged please let us know. Tel HQ 510 2055

January 2005

Pallion Engineering Ltd have won another order to refit a Seacat ferry, the SeaCat Diamant at their facility, the former  Doxfords shipyard at Pallion

Admiral Duncan's flagship the "Venerable"

As 2005 is the "Year of the Sea" and also the 200th anniversary of Trafalgar we have decided to make a large model of Admiral Duncan's flagship the "Venerable" at the Battle of Camperdown in 1797. Although the Venerable was not at Trafalgar, it does have a local connection to Sunderland in Jack Crawford. During the battle, the Admiral's colours were shot down. To the rest of the fleet the absence of the Admiral's colours would have appeared that the colours had been lowered to signify that the Admiral had surrendered. As this was not the case, Jack Crawford climbed the mast and nailed the colours back in place.

April 2005

We've received a picture from Neil Mearns of another SeaCat ferry arriving on the Wear for refit. The Emeraude France, seen here tied up at the Corporation Quay after arriving on the 9th before moving up the river to the Pallion Engineering facilities.

Members Meetings

Previously we have held members meetings on the second Monday of the month at Sunderland Yacht Club. This venue has proved to be inaccessible for some of our members. ft has therefore been decided to hold the meetings upstairs at the Hearts of Oak pub which is directly opposite our premises in Church Street East. We intend to have speakers at these meetings, although they are intended primarily as social occasions and as a means of passing on information about our activities. We hope that the change of venue may encourage more members to attend.

Venue Hearts of Oak, Church Street East

Time 7:00pm (1900 hours)
Date 2nd Monday of the Month
